瑞士卫队是教廷近卫队，由100名队员组成，其中士兵70名，士官25名，军官4名，牧师1名。指挥官军衔是上校，副指挥官是中校。
教廷近卫队的招募条件是：
1、必须是瑞士籍公民。
2、必须是天主教信徒。
3、在瑞士完成军事训练并获得结业证。
4、年龄在19-30岁之间。
5、高中或同等学历以上。
6、身高1.74米以上。
梵蒂冈的教廷卫队，为什么专招瑞士人呢？
这里面有500多年的历史渊源。
1505年，罗马教皇尤里奥二世把骁勇善战的的200名瑞士雇佣兵带到罗马，决定由他们来守卫梵蒂冈。
1527年，神圣罗马皇帝卡尔五世信奉路德教派，率两万大军包围罗马，意图抓捕教皇。
危急关头，瑞士雇佣兵挺身而出，与罗马大军展开了一场兵力极其悬殊的搏斗，结果189人的卫队战死147人，仅42人生还。教皇克列门斯七世在卫队的拼死护卫下通过密道逃生。
20年后，教皇保罗三世感动于瑞士卫队的忠诚勇猛，重建了瑞士卫队，并把人数增至225人。
自此，教皇的近卫队一直由瑞士籍士兵组成，这也成为梵蒂冈教廷的一大特色。
现在的瑞士卫队主要承担礼仪和接待的任务，差不多算是教廷的仪仗队。而梵蒂冈宪兵则承担着治安的任务，相当于警察。
瑞士卫队是“绝对忠诚”的象征，那么他们的待遇如何呢？
其实他们的工资并不高，每月1300欧元，合9600元人民币左右。不过额外的加班会有加班费，按小时计算。另外，食宿和交通都是教廷提供的，基本没啥支出。
主要是，瑞士青年认为，能参加瑞士卫队去保卫教皇，是一种无尚的荣誉和骄傲。
瑞士中立以来，是不允许向国外派遣雇佣兵的，但对于梵蒂冈是个例外。
但凡整个16世纪的全身板甲呢，这种佣兵题材倒是不错，但是半身板甲就总感觉差点事情
