生于爱荷华州温特塞特，素有"公爵”之称的西部牛仔明星，原名是马里奥麦可莫里森（Marion Michael Morrison）。他在加州长大，然后以足球奖学金申请进入南加大。暑假期间在福斯电影公司当工人和小道具管理员，因而和西部电影导演约翰福特建立了良好的私人关系。1928年开始在福特的电影中担任小角色，1939年以《驿马车》稳定了自己的戏路，在往后的二百多部电影中扮演了无数令人难忘的西部英雄。他在银幕上所表现的朴质敦厚与刚毅不屈也成为美国精神的代表。曾以《大地惊雷》获得奥斯卡最佳男主角金像奖。也是自30到70年代的十大卖座巨星之一1979年6月11日因癌症去世。
