E. Lawrence was played an central role while serving as a British liaison officer during the Arab Revolt of 1916-18. When the war ended, an American journalist, Lowell Thomas, toured Britain and the Empire giving an outstandingly successful slide-show about Lawrence's achievements. The romantic story of Lawrence's campaigns in Arabia and Allenby's in the Holy Land appealed strongly to a British public sated with horrific accounts of trench warfare on the Western Front. The legend of 'Lawrence of Arabia' was born.

During the war Lawrence was posted to the Military Intelligence Department in Cairo where he became, among other things, an expert on Arab nationalist movements in the Turkish provinces that now comprise Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, and the Hedjaz region of Saudi Arabia.

In October 1916 he was sent on a fact-finding mission to the Hedjaz, where Sherif Hussein of Mecca had rebelled against Turkish imperial rule. The quality of his reports and his empathy with Arab leaders led to a long-term role as a British liaison officer in the Arab Revolt, serving with the forces led by the Emir Feisal, one of Hussein's four sons.

He would be central to the capture of the Turkish stronghold at Medina, successful attacks on the Hedjaz Railway, which was the Turkish supply-line running south from Damascus to the Medina, the capture of Akaba, and the capture of Damascus.

After the war Lawrence served in the British Delegation at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, and although he fought for Arab independence, Syria, Palestine and Iraq were duly allocated to France and Britain as mandated territories - colonies in all but name. He served on and off in various military roles and won critical acclaim as an author for "Seven Pillars of Wisdom."

Lawrence died in a motorcycle accident on May 1935

Source: http://telawrence.info/telawrenceinfo/index.htm
