US Marines of the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, take up positions at a cemetery while comrades move forward behind them during a 24-hour foot operation in a poppy field area in Marjah, Helmand province, southern Afghanistan, on March 18, 2010. A total of 60 farms were searched and nothing suspected was found. The number of foreign troops under US and NATO command is set to rise to 150,000 by August, with most of the new deployment heading to the south.

Marines From Lima Company Conduct Live-fire, Close-quarters Marksmanship Drills Aboar

Marines from Lima Company, Battalion Landing Team, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, fire their Weapons during live-fire, close-quarters marksmanship drills on the flight deck aboard the Multi-purpose Amphibious Assault Ship USS Bataan, March 18. The 22nd MEU deployed to Haiti in response to a devastating earthquake, which struck Jan. 12. Marines and sailors began delivering relief supplies and providing medical aid in support of Operation Unified Response, Jan. 19. Local leaders with the Government of Haiti, the United Nations and non-governmental organizations took over primary responsibilities of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations around Haiti.

Christopher Larson, a mortarman, both with 1st Section, 81s Mortars Platoon, attached to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, await orders to fire a mortar round after receiving enemy small-arms fire at India Company's operating base in Marjah, Helmand province, Afghanistan, March 21. The mortarmen prepared their guns during a brief firefight that lasted several minutes. The 3/6 Marines and soldiers from the Afghan national army are in Marjah to support Operation Moshtarak, a push to rid the area of Taliban presence and intimidation.
